S06 - Level 2 Award in CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance)

Course Description

SIA Personnel security, Eyes Wide Open Video     This film shows the importance of SIA (Security Industry Authority) security staff and the need for the best training to support in the security role.  This film will get you thinking about security, recognising suspicious behaviour and incidents.    Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) operators carry out guarding activities using closed circuit television equipment, to either monitor the activities of members of the public in a public or private place, or to identify a particular person.

This is a 4 day course. This accredited qualification is ideal for anyone wishing to work as a CCTV operative, as it provides the necessary skills and knowledge to apply for an SIA licence in this field. It has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Subjects covered include roles and responsibilities of CCTV operators, codes of practice, operational procedures and guidelines, CCTV equipment and operation and surveillance techniques.


Unit 1: Working in the Private Security Industry - Core Learning for Common Security Industry Knowledge - 1 day

  • Awareness of the Law in the Private Security Industry
  • Health and Safety for the Private Security Operative
  • Fire Safety Awareness
  • Emergency Procedures
  • The Private Security Industry
  • Communication Skills and Customer Care
Assessed by a 40 minute, 25 question multiple-choice examination. Candidates must achieve a score of at least 18 out of 25 to pass this unit



Unit 2: Working as a CCTV Operator CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance) – 2 days

  • Introduction to the Roles and Responsibilities of the CCTV Operator and other CCTV Staff
  • Codes of Practice, Operational Procedures and Guidelines
  • CCTV Equipment and its Operation
  • Control Room Communications and Access Control
  • Legislation
  • Dealing with Incidents
  • CCTV Surveillance Techniques
  • Emergency Procedures in the CCTV Control Room
  • Health and Safety at Work in the CCTV Environment
Assessed by a 1 hour 40 question multiple-choice examination. Learners must achieve a score of at least 28 out of 40 to pass this unit.



Unit 3: Practical use operation of CCTV equipment – 1 day Assessed by the tutor and externally moderated by HABC to pass this unit.

Successful learners will gain a certificate for this course.

  • One of our team will contact you, giving you the course date and location.
  • You will then transfer payment for the course before the start date.
  • From Jan 2015 the SIA now require every person that wants to do any of the SIA courses to be assessed that they are a level 1 or above in English. You can send us a copy of an English qualification of level 1 or above, or attend a free 1 & ½ hour assessment.
  • On the first day of the course you will need to bring a passport photo and your ID (Passport or Driving Licence) and proof of address (Bill or Bank Statement) to the training.
To obtain the SIA licence this is split into two parts.
  • The 4 day training course needs to be successful completed to gain the level 2 certificate.
  • You can then apply to the Security Industry Authority (SIA) for your CCTV license, the SIA will charge you £220 for this license. When you receive your license you can work as a CCTV operator anywhere in England, Wales and Scotland.
We send the SIA License Application to the Security Industry Authority (SIA) on your behalf. It can take up to 40 working days for the SIA to process your application. but most of the time it is a lot quicker.  

  The 4 day CCTV Operator Level 2 training will be held in London and will be within walking distance of the train station. We are also able to deliver this course around the country at your premises for groups of 8 or more people. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
